3 Benefits of Having a Positive Attitude

When learning about hypnotherapy and hypnosis, you will often hear that it is all about leveraging the power of positive thinking. But what does this really mean? What does having a positive attitude actually have to do with health and wellbeing and how does it effect you?

One Study conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Carolina and University of Michigan found that meditation focused on positive thinking.

“produced increases over time in daily experiences of positive emotions, which, in turn, produced increases in a wide range of personal resources (e.g., increased mindfulness, purpose in life, social support, decreased illness symptoms). In turn, these increments in personal resources predicted increased life satisfaction and reduced depressive symptoms.” Full Article Here

So as time goes on, more researchers continue to explore the benefits of a positive attitude and optimism, especially on one’s general health and wellness. Below is a brief list of what they’ve found so far.

  • A Positive Attitude Helps You Cope Better

When confronted with stressful situations, optimists usually fare better than pessimists do. And it’s not surprising why. Even when you encounter disappointment, whether it’s failing a test, not getting a job, or being rejected, having a positive mind-set makes it easier to focus on what you can do to fix the problem. Rather than focus on their frustrations and making matters worse or blowing them out of proportion (which we've all done), optimists will create an action plan to achieve a sound life balance.

  • Increased Lifespan, Health, and Lower Risk of Depression

Several studies have suggested a direct pattern between a positive attitude and increased resiliency against common health problems like hypertension (high blood pressure) and even depression, one such study can be read Here. Psychologists believe this might have to do with the placebo effect, that quite simply, means mind over matter. When your mind thinks it’s going to get better or stay healthy, the body follows suit, even without any external factors like medical treatment. If your a parent you've done this a number of times, when your child has come to you hurt, crying with a cut and all you've done is put a plaster on or gave it a kiss to which the kid walks off happy thinking the issues has been fixed and no longer is a concern.

  • Makes You Appear Beautiful, Inside and Out

As cliché as it sounds, positive thinking helps to bring out the best in you in a natural way. You start smiling more, you’re friendly, happy, and exude confidence. Your inner beauty, which is really just another term for self-esteem, becomes more visible to people around, which can go a long way to complementing your physical appearance.

Scientists are still trying to understand why positive think yields these health benefits. One theory suggests that being positive allows people to cope better with stress. Another school of thought is that optimistic people naturally gravitate toward healthier lifestyles, they get more exercise, follow a balanced diet, and avoid harmful habits like smoking and drinking large amounts of alcohol.

Whatever the case maybe, these benefits are but the tip of the iceberg of positive thinking. For the most part, a positive attitude is the sum of life’s experience, but it can also be acquired through practice. This is where hypnotherapy comes in, giving you a chance to adopt a positive mind-set with the help of a hypnotherapist.
